What to include on a freelancer invoice
A freelance invoice rarely fits one flat rate. Between a base project fee, hours that spill past scope, revision rounds, and the occasional rush job, a generic template forces you to improvise the layout every time. Here’s what an invoice built for freelance work should actually cover:
Your name (or business name) and the client's billing contact
Freelancers often invoice under their own name one month and a DBA or LLC the next — pick one and keep it consistent per client so their AP records match.
Invoice number, issue date, and a due date tied to your terms
Net 15 is common for freelance work since you don't have a corporate AP department's cash-flow cushion — state it clearly instead of leaving "due on receipt" implied.
The project or retainer period the invoice covers
"Website copy — March 2026" or "Retainer: April 1–30" on the invoice header means a client scanning six months of invoices later can tell them apart at a glance.

Keep them on separate invoice numbers even for the same client, since a retainer that always lands on the 1st is easy to automate, but a project invoice's due date depends on when the work actually finished.
How do I bill a client for extra revisions or scope creep?
State your included revision count up front (in your proposal or the retainer terms), then add a separate line item — "Revision round 3 (2 included)" — any time a client goes past it.
